Controlling Pet Stress

Hurricane season has begun here in Florida and for some pet owners it’s all about keeping their pet stress-free whenever they hear thunder during the next couple of weeks.

I’ve heard of stories of dogs who are terrified of thunder and lightening, and with July around the corner, there will be fireworks too.

Fireworks And Pets

Independence Day is around the corner and that means so are fireworks. For animal control officials, July 4-6 are the busiest dates because pets often run away from their homes. The loud sounds have always made me feel uneasy, I can’t imagine what it sounds like for our pup.
To help protect your pet, here are an additional 4 tips on how to make your pet feel safe this 4th of July:

1. Wear a pet ID. Make sure your pet has up-to-date identification in case he/she runs away when scared by noisy fireworks. ID can help your pet be returned to you safely.

2. Avoid fireworks. Don’t take your pet to events that involve fireworks. Your pet is better off being left home if you are going to partake in firework festivities.

3. Don’t leave pets outside. Keep pets inside as much as possible during fireworks displays. The insulation of your home will help drown out the noise and make your dog feel more secure.

4. Don’t scold a scared pet. This will scare and confuse a dog and reinforce fearful behaviors.

Although we don’t like putting our dog in a crate, there are some pet owners who do and their pets are used to it. If this is the case, crate your dog and make sure his favorite toy is nearby for further distraction.

  1. I agree with all of your tips to keep pets safe and stress-free as much as possible! My cat was born with an anxiety disorder that she needs to take medication for. She is skittish and nervous….even if the phone rings as an intercom for the door! She knows the different ring sounds, and goes to hide immediately.

    1. It's not easy when your pet has anxiety. For some, it's an issue of being alone while others are scared no matter what. :/ all we can do is comfort our little ones.

  2. My youngest kitty is so scared of thunder but its weird because when she was a kitten she would sit in the window watching and listening to the storms even when the wind was such that the curtains would almost stand straignt out.

  3. This looks like a good way to keep pets calm during storms. I am lucky that I don't need it for my dog because he doesn't tolerate clothing.

  4. I wonder if there is any kind of stress-reducing outfit for cats! My youngest cat has an anxiety problem, and I don't know if I could get an outfit on her, but it may be worth a shot…if there was such an item!

  5. Thanks Fatima! I definitely will! Although, I would need about 5 people to get this shirt on my cat, she is sooo skittish!!! And then, getting her to feel comfortable wearing it is another problem. She is not exactly what I would call a "lap-cat"! But, I will check out the site, and take a look!! Thanks!!!

  6. I checked out the website, and found a thundershirt for a cat. I may be able to get in on my cat, as it seems to have only 1 clasp. It's a little outside my budget right now, but maybe something I can look into getting later.
The one item that I didn't like is the thudercap for dogs. It looks cruel. But, I guess there is a method to it working.

  7. I was really into reading your post on Pet Stress!! I myself have known a lot of dogs that have this syndrome. The Thundershirt sounds like a real solution to the problem. It makes sense to cuddle him up like in tight swaddling blankets would work and make him feel more secure. I will let my family know about this Awesome Thundershirt! Thankyou so much for sharing!!

  8. Well, yesterday I decided to steam clean the area rug in my apartment. My 7-year old cat is very anxious, and panicked. She doesn't like it when I move the furniture, or start up a loud machine! She hid in the bedroom for the entire time, and then was afraid to step onto the clean carpet…because it looked different! She is so cute, and funny!!!

  9. my dog was mistreated as a babe by the prvious owners and was terrified by the vacum but on guy fawkes he took no notice. I asked the vet and he said he possibly had a bad experience with the vac( horrible people) but that the fireworks may not have phased him since he usually sits right by me when someone sets them off outside
