Dealing with a sick baby is never fun. Add a cranky and tired mom and you have a recipe for a disaster.
This weekend was tough for Sebastian and I, and probably the toughest for Jeff. Dealing with two cranky people cannot be fun for someone who already works with people on a daily basis. I had to put aside the way I was feeling a roll up my sleeves. Jeff and I took turns taking care of the little guy.
We went with medicine first just so Sebastian would not get a fever. Within two hours, the little one developed a fever. I chose to go with natural remedies from then on. I do not like taking medicine for anything, not even menstrual cramps. For me, it is all about letting the body cure itself, and somehow I swore the medicine would help control his cold. I know how uncomfortable it is to rest when your nose is clogged.
To help bring Sebastian’s fever down, I prepared a cool bath. I applied Vick’s Vapor Rub on his chest, temples and under his nose, and quickly dressed him and passed a cool, damp towel on his forehead as I breastfed him. He peacefully fell asleep.
The Following Day When Sebastian woke up the next day, he looked better. He was back to his wild self; chasing Rocky and running around the house. It was nice to see him in good spirits.
I knew offering Sebastian some medicine would only make him depend on it, but I wanted a quick fix. My initial thought was natural remedies, it was the only way I knew would really work. The problem with these natural remedies is that it takes time. I gave him chicken noodle soup for breakfast, with a side of honey and lemon water. The warm liquids helped soothe his cold, and his stuffy nose was clearing up.
After a long nap, he was about 85% better. We went for our usual afternoon walk, and when we returned, so did his stuffy nose. It was painful to see him back to breathing through his mouth and it breastfeeding was once again uncomfortable for him. He did not want the rest of the soup nor did he want to continue drinking his honey and lemon water. We needed a different route and we went with fruits that were high on Vitamin C and I gave him his organic carrot and orange juice. Of course I watered it down a little, but it definitely helped with the stuffy nose, that and I continued to put Vick’s Vapor Rub on the outside of his nostrils.
Today he is about 90% better, which is an improvement because now he can sleep at night without getting frustrated because he cannot breathe and breastfeed. Poor baby. It will take time, but I refuse to go with the medicine route again.
