As you may have already read in previous posts, Jeff and I are expecting our second child this November. This means the holidays are going to be filled with family and friends as we welcome our baby boy.
But that’s not the only thing on my mind.
Spreading Holiday Cheer
When it comes to holiday shopping, I like to make sure I have all the kids squared away before starting on the adults. For the adults, I typically make them a family basket. It’s a tradition my mom has enstilled in me since I was a young girl.
Normally, Jeff likes to wait at least a week before Christmas to buy all the kid’s presents. But I have a strange feeling last minute gift-buying will only hurt us.
Although I have yet to make the first Christmas gift purchase, I have been observing the kids and their parents’ posts about them to help with our gift decision. Which brings me to my four holiday shopping tips:
1. Get a clue.
People often drop off hints throughout the year. For those of you whose family members are modest, think about their hobbies and likes. There’s always something for everyone, no matter how big or small.
2. Think about their siblings.
Sometimes we focus only on what one family member wants that we forget the importance of sharing. A couple of years ago, Jeff and I purchased an iPad mini for his nephew and a Square for his mom. His nephew enjoyed the gaming apps while Jeff’s sister was able to use the Square for her business. It’s a win-win!
3. Set a budget.
You might have the perfect gift in mind, but once you see the price tag, you may want to take a step back. Think about what you can and cannot afford at the moment. You don’t want to go broke just because you thought it’d be perfect for someone else to have a certain gift.
4. Be creative.
Maybe what someone in your family really needs isn’t an object, but rather financial help or something along those lines. I’ve offered to pay my father’s phone bill during a tough time. You never know how a small gesture can go a long way.
Do you have any holiday shopping tips you’d like to share?
