Are you looking for ways to make Halloween a success for the family? There’s more to the festivities than pumpkin decorating ideas.

With a handful of guidelines in place from the CDC, there’s no excuse for you not to put your costumes on and enjoy some fun. From scary movies to intimate gatherings, you can get the most out of the holiday this year.

9 Fun Halloween Ideas

Aside from carving/decorating pumpkins within your home or outside with friends and neighbors, there are other activities you can plan.

Below are 9 fun ideas for Halloween with the kids this year:

Decorate your inside and/or outside your home.

It doesn’t take much to get your home ready for the festivities. I picked up a handful of our home decorations from Amazon and had it delivered the same week.

Plan a Halloween scavenger hunt for the kids to find items during a family walk.

The kids love taking a walk with the pups — it’s a great way to exercise together and stay active. Turning it into a scavenger hunt is an exciting way to make things interesting for the little ones.

Host a virtual Halloween costume contest.

Get the family together on a video chat for Halloween fun! You can plan to be silly, scary, or creative. The goal is to get the family involved.

Do a Halloween movie night with the kids.

I’ve been watching Halloween-themed films with the kids the entire month of October to help get them excited about the holiday. They love candy, but there’s more to this celebration than sweets.

Get a costume parade going with the neighbors.

Your neighbors might be looking for ideas to celebrate Halloween themselves. Helping them plan a night together is always fun.

Be sure to maintain your distance and wear your cloth mask. A costume mask isn’t a substitute for one and will not help protect you from COVID.

Host a drive-thru candy pickup.

This is an easy setup and is perfect if you’re trying to keep everyone safe and at a distance. Also, you get to see everyone in their costumes!

Have an outdoor costume party.

Being outside can help you practice safe social distancing. Plan to wear a cloth mask if you do decide to host an outdoor party with family and friends.

Set up an outdoor Halloween movie night for family and friends.

Movie nights are always a hit with family and friends — funny ones are even better! Lighten up the mood for your loved ones by hosting a movie night everyone can enjoy.

Create a haunted house setting in your home for the kids to enjoy.

This is one of the ideas I can’t wait to do with the kids. The boys are constantly talking about how it’s such a great idea.

Apparently, the kids love getting scared. After all, it’s payback.

5 Fun Budget-Friendly Halloween Costumes

The holiday season is one of my favorites to spend with the kids. This year, the kids have been into Halloween movies.

To help the kids prepare for the upcoming holiday, we’ve been watching classic Halloween films. From The Addams Family to Beetlejuice, they’ve been enjoying some of my childhood favorites.

Although the kids enjoy choosing their own costumes, there are several costume ideas for those who enjoy family costumes. Here’s a list of budget-friendly costume ideas the family can enjoy:

Skeleton Costume

A skeleton costume is one of the easiest costumes to recreate for the family. You can use a shirt and pants or a bodysuit — the choice is yours.

Instead of a mask, choose face paint. This way you can use your cloth mask over your mouth.

Cat Costume

Simple and straight to the point — a cat costume is every mom’s go to. With cat ears and a tail all you need is a black bodysuit or top and pants.

It’s a cute costume idea the requires little effort.

Morticia Addams

Put on a long black dress, a black wing, and some red lipstick to become one of Halloween’s most iconic mother. You can also go with a sexy black dress and be Elvira — it all depends on how you’re feeling.

Tired Mom Costume

This costume idea is pretty simple. Just show up in comfortable clothing and a mom bun. Spill some food on yourself and call it the tired mom look.

I’m sure you can get a lot more creative than this, but it’s a start!

Fitness Instructor Costume

Throw on some athleisure clothing, a pair of sneakers, and make your way over to the Halloween festivities. This is perfect when you’ll be running around with the kids anyway.

Whatever Halloween ideas to celebrate at home you choose to go with, just remember to make this year exciting for the kids. Do your best to go with budget-friendly ideas and get the most out of time with family and/or friends.
