MomViews: Making Your Apartment Into A Home

MomViews Motherhood Through My Eyesdiy, home decor, do it yourself, Your home is more than just a house, or an apartment building. For most moms, it’s a place where they can experiment with colors, different furniture and really add their personal style to the four walls surrounding them. Some like to keep it simple, while others really let their creative juices flow. In this week’s MomViews segment, I had a chance to chat with Anj Rodriquez, blogger at Makin’ My Apartment A Home and playfully known as “ARod,” to hear how she has turned several of her thrift store purchases into amazing masterpieces.

MomViews: You have awesome DIY projects practically each day. How did you first discover this passion?

Anj Rodriguez: It’s something I’ve always had but never explored. Since starting my blog I’ve found my love for sharing what I transform, with others. And I’ve found endless inspiration in other blogs.

MV: Do you sell your projects anywhere?

AR: I do not at this time. Last year I started a business Ashes Restored to do just that, but sadly had a fallout with my partner. And life has brought me many other distractions. I hope to bring the business back to life later this year.

MV: What goes through your mind when you see an antique?

AR: I look for its beauty in lines or carving. Then I think to myself how can I make it a little more modern/ useful now. For me usually the answer is paint.

MV: What do you like most about transforming these hidden treasures into gems?

AR: Using them and the pictures. I love to look at before and after pictures. That’s where you can really see a difference.

MV: What advice would you give to someone who says they don’t have time to transform their beat up furniture, and would rather buy a new one?

AR: If you can afford it GO FOR IT! I think my advice is better suited for thrifty shoppers, and that is IF YOU CAN DREAM IT YOU CAN DO IT. Don’t be afraid to try. Stop by a thrift shop and buy a piece of furniture. You can get something as low as $5, I swear. Take it home and paint it. Make it work for you. Make it work for your home style. Once you do, you’ll be hooked!

Join me next week to learn how a mother of two energetic boys enjoys the simple things in life alongside her husband. Also, don’t forget to stop by tomorrow a continuation of the #AllYouNeedIsLoveProject.
