I may not be the first to tell you this, but bloggers should have a media kit. Whether you choose to use it all the time or not is up to you.
Although there is nothing wrong with sharing your blog stats on your About page, having a simple cheat sheet for PR reps and other press to look through builds confidence in your brand. After all, you are your own brand, and how you “sell” yourself is important. When I first signed up for Cision, I was not prepared for the amount of emails I would be receiving on a daily basis from PR reps in my area. Having a media kit handy was one of the best decisions I ever made. I will admit that I have not sent it to everyone I have replied to, but to the ones that ask for my blog stats, I simply shoot over a PDF version and explain in detail where in my week I can schedule their announcement. It sounds easy, does it not? That is why it is important to make time to create your media kit. It definitely helps get you and your blog a lot more organized.
And in November 2014, I decided to update it using Keynote (it is a lot like PowerPoint). I am so happy with it now. I have not updated it ever since (sorry, PR reps, but I will soon!) Here is my most recent media kit: MTME Media Kit Nov14
So, for those of you looking to improve your blog outreach I suggest two things:
1. Work on your media kit. Whether you decide to hire a graphic designer or work on it yourself using Keynote and/or Canva, you should sit down and research what other bloggers have done and how you can make it work for you. If you have a friend in the blogosphere that has a media kit, reach out and ask them a few questions. Asking to see their media kit is fine. They should not be offended, after all we are trying to grow together 😉
2. Sign up for Cision. It is free and you can build the presence of your blog by attending and covering the events. There are several product review opportunities, too.
One thing I love about creating a media kit and updating it as I go is seeing how much my blog has grown. My numbers have doubled since I have improved my online strategy. I love reaching out to different bloggers for their tips. So, do not be afraid to ask questions. Most bloggers want to see you grow, too!
